Apps

Applications worth knowing about, and what it takes to build them. This category collects write-ups on finished software — browser tools, AI agents, mobile and web apps — with a focus on what the app actually does, who it is for, and how it fits into a working day.

Each post looks at a single product in detail: the problem it solves, how it is set up, where it sits alongside the tools you already use, and the limits worth knowing about before you commit to it. Where a project is open source or self-hosted, the setup steps are included so you can try it yourself rather than take someone’s word for it.

The emphasis is on software that is already usable. A tool has to be installable today, by someone who is not its author, before it gets written up here. That rules out a lot of announcements and demos, which is deliberate — there is already plenty written about products that do not exist yet.

Where an app overlaps with something you are considering building, the posts try to be honest about the build-versus-adopt question. Most of the time adopting is cheaper. Occasionally the off-the-shelf option is close enough to be frustrating but far enough away to be useless, and that is worth knowing before you spend a month on it.

If you are weighing up whether to adopt a tool or build your own version of it, these posts are written to help you make that call.
